Saturday Night Fever - Frankfurt - December 16th 2006

A trip to Frankfurt a week before christmas - I would only do that for a very special show. And Saturday Night Fever is a very special show... at least for me. ;)
I have already seen this tour production in various cities throughout the year but with another cast. So I was quite curious to see this new cast.
The show itself hasn't changed a lot so no real surprise there.

However, the first thing I noticed was the horrible sound. Totall awfull! It was hard to understand what the cast was saying - ok, no real problem for me as I know the whole text by heart but I can imagine someone who doesn't know the show would have had a real problem.
The lighting wasn't much better - you could hardly see the people on stage from time to time.
So, definitely the worst location I've seen this show in. Quite a pity really as the Alte Oper is a beautiful building - at least from the outside.

Tony Manero: Thomas Puskailer
Considering he wasn't feeling well he did quite a good job. Still don't really like his acting - or as I should better call it: his over-acting. His voice was alright - not very strong this time which was mainly due to him being rather ill that day.
But he will never be one of my favourite Tonys... nothing against him personally. He just isn't "the one" in my eyes. ;)

Stephanie Mangano: Kara Tremel
Wow, wow.... and WOW. She was totally amazing - definitely my highlight of the evening! "What kind of fool" was very emotional and I loved the note she hit at the end of the song. Her acting was spot on. And she even manages to make the pink Madonna-like costume Stephanie wears during the first dancing studio scene look good. :)

Annette: Anouk Maas
She has definitely improved since the last time I saw her in this role several months ago. Don't think she should try and sing the songs exactly like Talita Angwarmasse did - it just doesn't work. Her acting was alright - quite a cheeky Annette.

Monty: Mark Polak
Really great to see him in this show again. I loved him as Monty in the Cologne production of the show. Of course, the current production is quite different. But Marko did really well nonetheless. I really like his voice and his acting was great. Not as "crazy" as John Davies but then that's hardly possible anyway. ;)

Bobby C: Ross Antony
That was something I was really curious to see. And what can I say? Ross was great! A very different Bobby C - not as shy as others I've seen in the part. "Tragedy" was simply amazing. Totally different as well but really, really good.
So all in all a fantastic performance! Well done!

Double J: Gianni Meurer
Ah well... this one is hard to descibe. I think he wasn't bad but he didn't really suit the character. Gianni was trying so hard to look and act cool that I just didn't believe him. It didn't look real. His singing was alright as was his dancing although he seemed to struggle with the choreography now and then.

Joey: Felix Maximilian
Great to see the coolest Joey ever back on stage. Felix did great but then I didn't expect anything else. He's perfect for the part.

Gus: JJ van Zon
I actually like to see JJ in roles like that - at least that's what I thought. He was really great as Joe Vegas in Fame. But he didn't convince me as Gus. Not sure why though. His acting was great, he's a great dancer.... but he's no Gus in my eyes.

Doreen: Karin Kern
She is perfect for the part - always was and always will be. :)

Flo Manero: Christine Dechantsreiter
She has improved so much since I first saw her in Bremen several months ago. I didn't like her as Flo Manero back then but now I really do!

Frank Jr/Jay: Marco Heinrich
Another familiar face on stage and I still love to see him as Frank Jr and Jay. Great show!

Linda: Julia Berger
Fantastic to see her on stage again. She's one of the reasons I was looking forward to SNF in Frankfurt. Just why did they put her into that horrible "patchwork" costume with the blonde wig for the disco scenes....

Connie: Alexandra Harfield
Unfortunately she didn't really stand out. She's a good dancer and looks the part - but she didn't have the same stage presence as some others I've seen in the part.

Maria and Cesar: Desiree Duarte and Shane Morley
Desiree looks so beautiful as Maria... and Shane all in red is quite a nice sight as well. ;)
They both did a great job. "Salsation" was great - maybe not as powerful as I've seen it with Kerry Swain and Chris Berioz but still very, very good.

Shirley and Chester: Julia Lawrence and Robb Morris
Great to see Robb as Chester again... but where is his wig?? I missed it! ;)
Julia and Robb looked good together. Finally a Chester that is almost the same height as Julia. I liked their "Open Sesame" although Robb's little one-man-dance at the end looked rather funny. :)

Ensemble:
Emile Armstrong, Axel Baer, Nina Becker, Janine Buck, Abbie Guilding, James Rees, Veronique Spiteri, Giovanni Vitale, Michelle Escano
The ensemble was quite good although not as powerful as I've seen it with different casts. The people that stood out for me were Michelle Escano (what a great surprise to see her on stage - she replaced Nina Weiß who was off that day) and Emile Armstrong. Michelle was really funny as Granny in Disco Duck. :)
I have to admit I wasn't too impressed with James Rees during Disco Duck. And Giovanni Vitale seemed very insecure on stage - but that might be because it was only the first week of the show. ;)

So, all in all it's good to see SNF back on stage. But I have to say I've seen this production in better places and with a cast that fit together a lot better than this one (although they do have some brilliant performers on stage this time).
