Guys and Dolls – London – October 5th and 7th 2006 (7:30pm)

I could never miss out on the chance to see this fantastic show more than once when I’m in London for several days. Guys and Dolls is a fantastic old-fashioned musical – we need more shows like this instead of more and more musicals just based around the music of a band or singer!

Once again I had such a great time watching the show. The set design is wonderful especially considering that the stage is not that big. They still manage to have all these different location – the Havana bar, the mission, the sewer (hehe) etc. I love the way they are using all those lights for the song “Guys and Dolls” – looks great!

I’ll do one review for both shows I watched. The cast was almost the same except for a very important change to the lead cast on Thursday evening. ;)

Sky Masterson: Adam Cooper
So, now I’ve seen him as Sky for the last time. I’m really sad he’s leaving the cast. In my eyes he did a great job as Sky. He’s not a trained singer and still his “Luck be a lady” was brilliant! His acting was very convincing in my eyes. He’s very laid-back when playing the character which suits the part. Plus I love the looks he gives Sarah Brown… although it does seem a bit like he’s undressing her with his eyes. ;)

Sarah Brown: Kelly Price
She’s leaving the cast as well so I won’t see her in the part again. Sad to see her go but I’m sure I’ll be able to catch her on stage again in another show in the near future. Kelly is definitely one of the upcoming musical stars. She is totally amazing. I love her acting, I love her voice and she is absolutely cute and convincing as Sarah Brown.
“If I were a bell I’d go ding dong ding dong ding” ;)

Miss Adelaide: Lynsey Britton
Hadn’t seen her in the part before. She looked very young especially next to Patrick Swayze but no one can blame her for that. ;)
I really liked her acting. But what really bothered me was her voice. And please don’t be mad at me but in my opinion her voice is really squeaky. Didn’t like her singing at all.

Nathan Detroit: Sebastien Torkia (Oct. 5th 2006)
Ok, now is the time for me to say “YAY”. Who would have thought I’d ever see him play that part! After all I had to book a trip to London just to see him as Sky. And this time it was pure luck that Patrick was off and Andrew Playfoot had lost his voice (he’s first cover for Nathan – and I do feel sorry for him losing his voice… well, a bit… haha).
Seb was everything I had expected him to be in this role! I loved the fact he got to show his comical talent. It showed what a great performer he is. His singing was – as always - absolutely fantastic. I’m really happy I got the chance to see him as Nathan! And he shouldn’t worry about any slip ups – no one really noticed them anyway. ;)

Nathan Detroit: Patrick Swayze (Oct. 7th 2006 – 7:30pm)
Patrick was back for the evening show on Oct. 7th and he did really well. His singing is not outstanding especially after having seen Seb as Nathan just 2 days earlier. I really like his acting even though he gives Nathan a very foolish look from time to time. He does pull some rather weird faces now and then but in my eyes that only adds to his portray of the character. So, all in all a great performance from him and good to see he was obviously feeling better.

Benny Southstreet: Spencer Stafford (Oct. 5th 2006)
I can only repeat what I’ve said about him before: Great acting but he is definitely no dancer at all. He looked rather uncomfortable during all the dance scenes. His singing was good but I wasn’t overly impressed this time.

Benny Southstreet: Sebastien Torkia (Oct. 7th 2006 – 7:30pm)
The guy is so talented – it’s almost unbelievable. No matter what character he is playing he always fits in perfectly. Great dancing, great singing and great acting. And absolutely faultless performance!

Arvide Abernathy: John Conroy
Always great to see him on stage. “More I cannot wish for” has become one of my favourite songs in the show!

Big Jule: Nick Cavaliere
I especially loved his interaction with Seb on Oct 5th. It still has me in fits of laughter when he sings his one line during the “bachelor party”.

Lt. Brannigan: Jo Servi
Those eyes…. I still don’t understand how anyone can look him straight in the eye when he’s standing there wide-eyed. Although it did look like a little staring contest on Oct 5th when Seb and Jo were facing each other on stage during “Sit down”.

Nicely Nicely Johnson: Steve Elias
He has settled into the part now. Totally convincing and I loved his “Sit down”. What a voice! First time seeing him with Seb as Benny on Oct 7th and I think the they worked really well together!

General Carthwright: Gaye Brown
She really fits into this part. Great show!

Rusty Charlie: Darren Carnall
Ok, I still haven’t seen him as Benny and who knows if I ever will. But at least I got to see him in more than just his ensemble part again. Acctually he played both Rusty Charlie in the beginning and his usual ensemble part for the rest of the show so it was a bonus I got to hear him sing during the first song. I certainly didn’t mind. ;)
I love seeing him on stage. He’s an amazing dancer and a great singer!

Ensemble:
Only one male swing with Christopher Bennett covering some of Andrew Playfoot’s parts. I’m not sure if there were any female swings on I have to admit. The whole ensemble did a great job. Good to see Ashley Hale again although she still doesn’t look like a Havana girl to me.

Here are some pics taken after the evening show on Oct 7th.

Kelly Price - I finally managed to get a photo with her :-)
